This appliance is used to help close an anterior open bite, which may have been caused by a tongue habit or thumb sucking habit.
The appliance has a built-in “fence” which, over a period of time, will hold back the patient’s tongue upon swallowing. This in turn will prevent the tongue from pushing forward between the anterior teeth, which can create or increase the anterior open bite. As time progresses with the tongue out of the way, the teeth should close down into an ideal overbite of approximately 1-2 mm.
If the patient is a thumb sucker, the crib will have additional “pokies” on the fence to give the patient a sharp reminder to keep their thumb out of their mouth. Once the patient has stopped sucking their thumb, the teeth should close down into an ideal overbite of approximately 1-2mm.
